In ancient Greek and Roman traditions, people would place offerings of food in a sacred place for the spirits to find later. These places were called oenotria or “sharp trees” – bee hives.
The hive would be visited during festival times to receive offerings of food and drink. These rituals are still observed today in Greek Orthodox churches called kathimerias (“honey chambers”). During this ritual, blessed bread is placed inside a hive where bees make honey for the congregation to consume. Drinking from a honeycomb is also part of this ritual in honor of Demeter, the Greek goddess of agriculture, as bees bring honey to the hive from flowers.
